In this book the writer makes it easy to picture what is happening. There are many ways that Edgar Allen Poe uses suspense, foreshadowing, and imagery in The Cask of Amontillado. In the beginning of this story, Montresor asks Fortunato more than once, if he has somewhere that he needs to be. Fortunato finally answers with no and Montresor decides that it will be safe to follow through with his plan. It almost seems like he is giving Fortunato a chance to turn back or Montresor isnt wanting to kill Fortunato. He also takes advantage of Fortunato since he is very drunk and doesnt know exactly what is going on. This makes it a lot easier for Fortunato to go along with what Montresor asks him to do. When Montresor asks him more than once about his plans the reader can get the idea that something bad is going to happen. Montresor wants to make sure nobody is going to come looking for Fortunato and thatrs why Montresor keeps asking Fortunato if he has plans. This gives the reader the idea that Montresor is probably going to do something other than show Fortunato the wine. This makes the reader think that Montresor is going to hurt or kill Fortunato. Suspense is shown in the story by the characters being at a carnival where it is happy and cheerful and then it says theyre slowly going down into a dark, damp crypt. The reader gets the idea as they get deeper into the tunnels, something bad will eventually happen. Montresor keeps asking Fortanato about his health and seems to be acting like hers worried about him but he doesnt really care. Fortunato says he shall not die of a cough. This foreshadows an end to Fortunato. When Fortunato says he shall not die of a cough, this is true since he died from dehydration and starvation. Poe is able to create suspense throughout the whole story by talking about the tunnels and how damp and dark they are and the presence of death. The way he writes this story shows dark imagery. You can imagine Montresor taking Fortunato into the tunnels and how dark it is. The reader can imagine Montresor building the wall and even how drunk Fortunato is. Itrs amazing how many things you can imagine just by the way Poe wrote the story. Suspense was also shown when Montresor chained Fortunato and then slowly started building the wall to close him in where he couldnt get out. He would stop to look at him or listen to him and it made you wonder if he was dead yet. This book was constantly making you wonder what was going to happen next or if Fortunato was dead. This story also made the reader wonder if Montresor was just playing around and was going to let Fortunato go. The story made you wonder if they would ever get to the wine, but they never did. Itrs crazy what someone would do just to kill a person. The Cask of Amontillado was a weird story but a very interesting story to read.

If I were the coach of a softball team and had to formulate a pre-season, in-season, and post-season work out program I would start by making a list for each to stay on track. For pre-season, things I would bullet point would be; running, weight training, skill specific sessions and learning strategies. Next would be for in-season practices and this is going to be my maintenance phase. Last is the post-season part that is focusing on getting ready for the next year so I would bullet point these topics; weight training, running, skill specific practices, and leave room for participation in other sports as well. A pre-season training program should start 8-12 weeks prior to the first competition date (Powers 2012). This part of the season is to increase energy systems used in this particular sport to their maximum potential. With my softball team in a pre-season session, I would start with weight training and running to increase each individual player’s strength and endurance. S trength and endurance training should be done on alternating days to optimize strength gains but can be done together depending on what the coach is trying to accomplish. Roosevelt, Theodore (1858-1919), 26th president of Essay the United States (1901-09), the first president to exploit the public dimensions of his office in an age of mass communications, a reform leader at home and a skilled diplomat abroad. In his lifetime Roosevelt became a personal model, particularly for the countrys youth, in a way that no public figure has matched. He was one of the most popular presidents in American history. The son of a wealthy, socially prominent merchant, Roosevelt was born in New York City on October 27, 1858. He was educated by private tutors and studied at Harvard University, graduating in 1880 as a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the most prestigious social clubs. Ill health marred his boyhood, and he suffered poor eyesight, attacks of asthma, and nervous digestion, before teenage body-building efforts transformed him into a strong, vigorous young man. After his fathers sudden death in 1878, Roosevelt forsook scientific ambitions, developed political interests, and became engaged to Alice Lee of Boston, whom he married in 1880. Alice Roosevelt died in 1884, just after the birth of their only child. Their daughter, also named Alice, as Alice Roosevelt Longworth became a well-known Washington personality in later years. In 1886 Roosevelt married Edith Carow of New York, who became his most valued adviser. They had a daughter and four sons, the oldest of whom, Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., w as a decorated hero in the two world wars. Early Political Career After graduation from college, Roosevelt entered politics and abandoned the study of law when, as a Republican, he was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1881. He attracted immediate attention in the press with his upper-class background, colorful personality, and bold independence. In 1884, after serving three years in the Assembly, he left politics briefly, both from grief at the death of his wife and because he had alienated the reform wing of his party that year by supporting James G. Blaine for the presidency. Roosevelt spent the next two years ranching and hunting in the Dakota Territory, which began his identification with the Wild West. He continued to write histories, biographies, and magazine articles, producing more than a dozen books between 1880 and 1900. Back in politics in 1886, he ran unsuccessfully for mayor of New York City, campaigned for the national Republican ticket in 1888, and served as Civil Service commissioner in Washington, D. C., from 1889 to 1895. From 1895 to 1897, Roosevelt renewed political ties and enhanced his fame with his energetic, reform-minded service as New York Citys police commissioner. After campaigning for his partys national ticket again in 1896, he became assistant secretary of the navy and worked to expand and modernize the navy and get the United States into war with Spain over Cuba. War Hero and Vice President The Spanish-American War made Roosevelt a nationally known figure. His volunteer cavalry regiment, which included both cowboys and aristocrats like himself, was dubbed the Rough Riders and received extensive press coverage. Their charge at the Battle of San Juan Hill in Cuba (July 1898) was the most celebrated exploit of the war. Roosevelt became a popular hero overnight, and his favorite nickname for the rest of his life was the Colonel. He reaped a swift political reward when his partys New York boss, Senator Thomas C. Platt, chose him to run for governor in the face of scandals that threatened a Republican defeat. Enormous crowds greeted the candidate wherever he appeared in the 1898 campaign, and he carried his ticket to a narrow victory. Those crowds and similar outpourings when Roosevelt traveled west to a Rough Riders reunion in 1899 propelled him toward the Republican vice-presidential nomination as William McKinleys running mate in 1900. Also favo ring his nomination was Senator Platts desire to get him out of New York. Roosevelt was an activist, independent governor, who did not submit to the Republican organization; he responded to popular disquiet over big business and showed his own concern over conservation of natural resources. Gracefully although unwillingly submitting to the vice-presidential draft, Roosevelt demonstrated his energy and popularity again in the 1900 campaign, as he made whirlwind tours appealing to patriotic memories of the war. He had little to do as vice president, but his inactivity ended with McKinleys assassination in September 1901, when Roosevelt became the youngest president in U.S. history. His four sons all fought in World War I, and the death of the youngest, Quentin, in combat as an aviator in August 1918, was a heavy blow. Roosevelts health d eteriorated during the final years of his life, partly as a result of tropical fevers contracted on an expedition to the Amazon region of Brazil in 1914. He died at his home in Oyster Bay, New York, on January 6, 1919.
